If you’re prone to getting tonsil stones then it’s safe to say that you’re doing something wrong, either in your oral hygiene routine or in your diet.
Considering how big a part these two play in our everyday, it’ll be pretty difficult to make changes to them – at the beginning at least. But if you want to put an end to the infection then it’s just something you have to do.
In this post I’ll be showing you some of the most effective ways to do so and how to best work them into your schedule.
First Step – Removal
Now this won’t necessarily disrupt your daily routine, it’s just a necessary step you need to take to cure the infection.
There are many removal method available to you, and which one you choose does depend on the severity of your situation. But I recommend you opt for dental irrigation syringes for a number of reasons.
Firstly, because of their narrow size and narrow tip you will find it easier to get to the back of your throat without gagging – a common problem experienced by most tonsil stone sufferers. Secondly, they make removal of tonsil stones found under or behind your tonsils much easier because they squirt out water.
They are a cheap little product which will save you loads of time and stress so I highly recommend you pick one up.
If, however, your tonsil stones are stuck a little deeper in your tonsil then you might need to opt for something a little stronger. In this situation I recommend you get a Dental Flosser.
They may be a little more expensive but it’ll definitely do the trick – however make sure you be careful when using them.
Second Step – Detoxify
So this step will take some getting used to as I recommend you do it every day.
As tonsil stones are built up because of bad bacteria and fungi found within your mouth, it’s likely that they will still be there even after your remove the stones. Therefore, we need to clean your mouth out of these.
There are a couple of ways you can do this – either gargling apple cider vinegar or oil pulling. I recommend the former because of its antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, and that it is much quicker than oil pulling.
Given its many dental health benefits, oil pulling is still a viable option. I just prefer apple cider vinegar.
When gargling ACV add about 1 tablespoon of it to a glass of water and take a small sip. Swirling this around your mouth for about 15 seconds, making sure it reaches your tonsils. Afterwards, spit it out and repeat with the rest of the glass.
By doing this every day you’ll go a long way to preventing the tonsil stones from ever coming back, which leads me nicely onto the next step…
Step Three – Prevention
This is easily the most important step in this process, by ignoring it everything else falls apart and the effort you put into those above goes to waste. But in saying that, it’s pretty easy to implement.
Plain and simple, the best way to prevent tonsil stones is ensure you’re taking great care of your oral health. Not just good care, great care.
This means not only brushing your teeth but also flossing as well and doing this at least three times per day. I know you probably got told by your dentist that brushing twice per day is fine but while it may keep your teeth clear of plague, it won’t necessarily prevent all types of infection.
There are a lot of small pockets around your mouth, tonsils and teeth that small particles of food and bacteria can hide in. If left there too long, they’ll eventually cause infection which puts you right back to step one – provided the infection is tonsil stones.
Step Four – Diet
As I mentioned in the intro, your diet can affect whether or not you get tonsil stones. If your diet consists of high amounts of junk food, alcohol and smoking then you’re just going to increase your chances in getting the infection.
These things cause dehydration and increase the bad bacteria content in your mouth which makes it much easier for the stones to grow. So make sure you either work these out of your diet or limit them as much as possible.
Another thing you want to do is make sure you’re drinking enough water each. By doing so your salvia levels will remain high enough so it can fight against and control the activity of bacteria and fungi in your mouth effectively.
So now that you know how to get rid of your tonsil stones, how to detoxify your mouth and how to prevent them every coming, you should be able to relieve yourself of the infection. Just try to work through the process as best you can and you’ll be just fine!
