As skateboarding becomes increasingly popular, the number of accidents attributed to this sport is growing. Here are some tips for using a skateboard safely:
• Check your board for loose, broken or cracked parts, sharp edges, a slippery top surface, or wheels with nicks or cracks. Serious defects should be professionally repaired.
• Choose a skateboarding area away from pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles.
• Wear protective gear, including a helmet, padding for hips, knees and elbows, and closed, slid-resistant shoes.
• When riding, keep an eye out for holes, rocks, bumps and debris. Never hitch a ride from a car or bicycle, and save complicated tricks for a specially designated skateboard area.
