Whether you have an indoor or an outdoor cat, the danger of fleas exists. How can you know if your cat has fleas? If it does, it will scratch and lick a lot along the back and around the tail, and you will probably be able to see fleas jumping around.
If you want to get rid of fleas on your cat, immediate reaction is very important, since they multiply very quickly – one flea can lay up to 600 eggs, which soon hatch and become adults that also lay eggs.
Moreover, flea infestation is not only unpleasant for your cat, but also very dangerous for its health and can cause anemia, which is especially dangerous for young kittens and elderly cats. It occurs when fleas drink a large amount of blood.
Cats groom themselves; and if you have more than one cat, they groom each other. This way they ingest fleas that carry tapeworm eggs, which then hatch inside the cat. Therefore, you need to have your cat dewormed once a month for the next three months, until you are sure they are all gone.
One way to get rid of fleas on cats is to use a flea comb to remove fleas from your cat’s hairs. Comb it and rinse the comb with a little water and detergent, and repeat this until the cat is completely without fleas. After that, wash your cat with a flea shampoo or baby shampoo. A flea shampoo for cats has the right dosage of cat flea medication; you need, however, to make sure the shampoo doesn’t get into its mouth, eyes, or nose.
After washing the cat, apply some topical flea treatment by splitting the cat’s hair down the middle between the shoulder blades. Alternatively, if there aren’t many fleas, you can make a flea dip yourself by putting one lemon in a pot of boiling water and boil for a minute or two. The next day, wash your cat in it and don’t rinse it.
You should also consider cleaning the area where your cat spends most of its time. Wash all the carpets, blankets, pillows, drapes, furniture, and everything else the cat came in contact with. Pay special attention to dark and hidden corners – the most common place fleas reside – as they they don’t like the sunlight.
Use a spray recommended by a vet in the house and in the garden, as well as on the cat itself. Just be careful to use a natural product safe for you, your cat, and the environment.
Fleas run away from lavender, so it might be a good idea to plant it in the garden or keep it inside. You can also use flea collars, but bear in mind that they can cause dermatitis, rashes, and itching. Instead, buy some brewer’s or nutritional yeast and sprinkle onto your cat’s food or rub it onto the skin.
Finally, after you have tried everything you could to get rid of fleas on your cat, be on the alert for the next couple of weeks, until you are sure they are gone for good.
