A hickey or a love bite on your neck can be very embarrassing, and you will surely want to hide it from the eyes of most people. Getting rid of a hickey can be a bit difficult, but here are some tips for you to try.
You might be asking yourself how it happened. Your lover’s mouth created a vacuum pressure which lead to bursting of the capillary, so it is actually a type of a bruise. This means it will disappear in time, and there isn’t much you can do to make it quickly go away. On the other hand, you can use some tricks to get rid of a hickey quicker.
The most important thing is to react as soon as you notice it; otherwise, it might be difficult to get rid of it or hide it. The first thing you can do is massage the area to improve the blood circulation and to loosen up the muscles. You can do it with your fingers or ice cubes.
Just like any other bruise, you can treat a hickey by putting a cold compress on it. You can try putting some ice into a towel to tighten the capillary vessels and prevent further bleeding and swelling. Or you can put a table spoon into a freezer to cool it, and then put it on the hickey. Repeat this several times with a couple of seconds of pause. The only problem with this is that it won’t work if you don’t do it right away.
One more thing that helps if you do it as soon as you notice it is putting alcohol on the hickey for several minutes. This might even prevent the black and blue spot from appearing.
You can also try rubbing the area with a hairbrush or a comb, but you have to be very careful and do this gently, or else you might end up with a bigger bruise.
There are creams with vitamin K that you can use to get rid of a hickey. Vitamin K helps the leaked blood to coagulate and prevents the accumulation of blood, potentially making the bruise go away faster.
Another tip to try is to use mint toothpaste; it might help the dark spot to lose its color. One painful way to move the blood deeper into the skin is to take a lipstick cap or a pen cap, put it on the hickey, press hard and twist.
After a day or two (yes, unfortunately, it won’t disappear overnight) try putting a warm compress to improve circulation. You can use a warm wet tea bag 2 or 3 times a day for about five minutes, or rub the hickey with warm water. Or you can soak a towel in warm water and put it on the hickey.
The hickey might hurt, especially if it’s bigger. In this case, you can take acetaminophen and aspirin, as it will speed up the process of healing.
Hickeys need 3 or 4 days to disappear. In the meantime all you can do is use your clothes to hide it. It is easy to hide a hickey in winter – just take a turtleneck sweater or a shirt with a higher collar. If you are a girl, you can hide your hickey with a scarf.
Or else, you can try to hide it by using a fluid powder or any kind of skin tone which blends in with your natural skin pigment color.
And the last thing you can do is cover the hickey with a bandage, but of course you will have to come up with a good story about why you have bandage wrapped around your neck.
