It is not always quite clear why people skip their breakfast. What is there that we don’t find likable about having breakfast first thing in the morning? Breakfast is something that comes as a routine, as a ritual, something that we really should start our day with. If it weren’t for breakfast there’d be little point to getting up at all.
You will soon realize that everything will seem more meaningful with a slice of toast, cup of tea, and newspaper in front of you while eating your first meal at the beginning of a day. Hence, make a sandwich, put the coffee on, feed the dog, and pull the curtains. Afterwards, there is always time to jump back into your bed.
This makes a big tray of golden, crunchy cereal – with none of the dusty floor sweepings often found in commercial versions. You can make your own mixture of fruit, nuts and seeds to suit your own taste. However, make sure you avoid poppy seeds unless you want to spend the rest of the day worrying about them being stuck in your teeth.
5 cups whole oats (sometimes called jumbo oats)
1 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1 cup golden sultanas
1/2 cup dates, roughly chopped
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
125ml sunflower oil
1/2 cup dried apricots, roughly chopped
3/4 cup raw almonds, roughly chopped
How to Make
First of all, let the oven heat to 170C fan bake. Then melt the sunflower oil and honey together in a small pot over a Low neat. Get a large bowl and toss the dry ingredients together in it, then pour over oil mixture and honey.
Mix it well using hands while making sure that the dry ingredients are evenly coated. After that, spread the mixture on a large roasting dish and put it in the oven for about an hour. Stir every 15 minutes. It is very important not to make a phone call, watch TV, or play with the baby, as this granola can quickly turn from toasted to incinerated in just a few minutes.
After it gets golden in color, take it out from the oven and let it cool before storing it in an airtight container. It goes well with berries and yogurt, or you can eat it sneakily in handfuls from the jar.
If you would rather start the day with something softer, it’s a good idea to combine the dry ingredients instead of honey and oil. Bowls of this dry mix will taste fantastic if they are soaked overnight in milk or juice for a Swiss-style Bircher muesli. Besides, you can add cream for a completely tasteful breakfast treat.
Now that you know how to make the perfect breakfast in terms of nutrition and taste, don’t be lazy and set aside an hour of your time to start the day the right way.
